3DFX on Windows 98 on Apple Macintosh

When discussing the supported essentials, it looks like "3DFX graphics acceleration" is right up there with MMX and DirectX APIs. Is this evidence of 3dfx "Mindshare" or what?!

"Insignia Solutions Unveils SoftWindows 98
Less than one week after the official release of Windows 98 to the general public, emulation technology firm Insignia Solutions late yesterday announced its own SoftWindows 98. Based on the same emulator powering SoftWindows 5.0, the new product delivers a complete Windows 98 environment on Power Macintosh systems, complete with support for Pentium MMX instructions, DirectX APIs, and support for 3Dfx graphics acceleration. Apple Computer is also lending its support behind the release in a recent trend recognizing that emulators can allow the Macintosh to break into previously Windows-only environments. The company said in a statement that it hopes to ship the product sometime in August at a retail price around $200. Upgrade pricing will be available for current SoftWindows and RealPC owners, and customers with SoftWindows 95 5.0 and RealPC will also be able to download a patch from the Insignia web site, allowing them to install a retail version of Windows 98 within the emulation environment." As reported in ThessaSOURCE, July 1, 1998.

PS: Voodoo II Apple Macintosh sales have not yet kicked in:
All that us Mac folks can do now is to pop in the Windows version of the software and run it in a Windows type window running under the Microsoft O. S with a Windows PCI 3DFX card installed. Though the speed is comparable, few Mac types bother. As posted earlier, I am told that the first of the necessary Voodoo II drivers optimized for Apple Macintosh are due from the developer in England by the middle of this month. I fully expect that the Power PC G3 RISC CPUs will not be the limiting factor that the slightly slower Pentium type CPU's seem to be in the Wintel universe. With Apple's advanced operating system, greater CPU processing bandwidth, and built in hardware level graphics support, I am expecting enhanced graphic effects rendering at grander screen resolutions. 3dfx on Mac should really kick. We shall see. HR
