Roth IRA + Dell and Y2K: David, Thanks for the input on the Roth IRA. Thanks also to Darrell and Kenneth.

As I mentioned in my post, the latest Louis Rukeyser's stock newsletter (July) has an interview with Marty Zweig who recommends Dell and Microsoft in the tech area. I just received it in the mail today. In the May newsletter Wall Street Week's hotest stock picker, Laszlo Birinyi (No. 1 rated panelist for 5 years on the show with average annual gain of 44.3%), also recommended Dell, along with Lucent and America Online in the tech area.

The Year 2000 (Y2K) issue will play out over the next year and a half. I read some articles a while back that suggested that a lot of PCs will be replaced due to Y2K. This is because the BIOS (stands for Basic-Input-Output-System I believe) chip in many older PCs (1996 and older) are not Y2K compliant. The idea is that many companies would simply choose to purchase new PCs rather than replace these chips. I think Y2K is going to have a negative effect on most tech stocks (tech budgets will be redirected to fix the problem, which is mostly software-related). I think Dell stock, however, is likely to react positively to Y2K because of these replacement orders.

Best,

John
