I assume you mean state's rights. Please tell me what other rights were compromised besides the right to hold slaves.

And if you believe that it was the federal government that was responsible because of how powerful it was, then I contest that slavery would still exist today if the federal government did not step in and say, "no."

Read Federalist #10 (I know you have if you're a poli sci major), and look at the Civil War. Then tell me that states are not, in fact, factions that need to be controlled.
