Out of the pit, and back on the thread... Glad to see some others support mandatory training for gun owners. It should go beyond safety training, though, and include marksmanship. I've seen too many people on handgun ranges who can't land a round on a target at 15 feet. Guns in these hands are 100% useless for self defense. On the somewhat off-topic line of ideal arms for home defense (which I started) - I use a pump 12 ga., 18 inch barrel and 6 round magazine. The load is a "soft" handload with #10 birdshot. (Don't try this in a semiauto - it may not repeat.) It does not penetrate a wall with sufficient force to cause major injury. If anyone thinks it wouldn't do the job on a bad guy, I invite them to stand in front of it. As for magazine capacity, I don't visualize a home defense situation I can't settle with 6 rounds. The idea of privately held assault rifles is something I don't much care for. I don't really trust the gov., but I trust it more than I trust some of the people who would leap at the chance to acquire assault rifles. If I was in the US and a state of total disorder arrived, I'd pack my Browning semiauto .30-06 and retire to a spot with 500 yds. visibility in all directions. I would approach none, and none with regard for personal survival would approach me. The efficacy of fully automatic fire in untrained hands is much overrated (and I've seen plenty of it). Hitting something with one shot is better than spraying landscapes. Having revealed myself as a closet survivalist and gun freak, I still don't think that everyone who wants a gun should be able to have one. We want a well-regulated militia, and that means training first. I didn't see any response to the question I asked about who decides when it's legitimate to take up arms against the government. Only half facetious questions: at what level of taxation is it permissible to pop the IRS man? If you feel harassed by the police, is it ok to snipe at them? I think Charles was right on target in substituting passion for extremism in defense of liberty. But unrestrained passion, in combination with weapons, has left many a dead body in its wake. Again, where do we draw the line? Steve
