The Financial Post reports in its Saturday, June
27, 1998, edition that an independent report by
Vancouver engineer Gary Hawthorn on an
exploration site operated by Mongolia Gold
Resources, said two sets of earth samples,
which showed high gold values and caused the
firm's shares to rise to $1.60 from $1.04 two
weeks after March 3, 1997, when it reported a
"large gold-in-soil geochemical anomaly" on its
Bumbat West property, probably did not come
from the site. The Post's Paul Bagnell writes
that the report was published on April 28 but
attracted little attention, likely because
Mongolia's shares never achieved the levels
seen on other recent gold fraud cases.
President Dave Webb said Friday the
company's staff and sample security measures
at the site met industry standards during the
period in question. Mr. Hawthorn's reports said
it was "unlikely" Canadian company officials
were involved in the scheme. VSE surveillance
said it was satisfied with the company's record
of disclosure on the matter.
