Jay,

Agree with everything you said but am less concerned with Assia than you. Also, I hope you don't get AMAT @ 20 since that would be a huge margin call for me. This downturn truly hurts and everyone that has hung in there deserves the 4-5 fold increase they will see over the coming years.

Best of luck to all,

Brian

Hi Jay,

Great post. I have actually been loading up on semi equipment shares right through this down cycle (AMAT, VECO, PRIA, CYMI) and still have a little dry powder yet, because I agree that they are going to be in the dumper for another halfayear at least. The only one that I have not recently increased is our beloved SFAM, due to a concern that they face a double negative:

(1) The bottoming equip cycle
(2) Loss of market share to a strong competitor

The 4 names I mentioned above are all suffering from # 1 but BFD - that'll pass. As far as I can tell, SFAM is the only one also suffering from # 2.

Still, I maintain a large chunk of SFAM shares and I'm not selling them either. I believe their high cash reserve and clean balance sheet will not allow too much greater drop and I do think they will be one of the CMP survivors when the cycle turns. My time horizon is 2008. Perhaps I'll nibble a few more SFAM shares if there is a fresh powerful negative reaction to their earnings release tomorrow.

In a way, I have a split brain over this. It is a bit of a bummer to see your portfolio halved but I try to totally shift my mind set during times like this to ... how many more shares can I accumulate at these "Blue light special on the semi equipment aisle" sale prices?

Don

Jay,
Well said. See I am keeping an eye out for your call near the bottom.
Any adjustments on AMAT after their pre-announcement. Everyone seemed pretty surprised by the impact of Asia on the company? Also would be interested in hearing how you are deploying your wealth now.
