Sun Snaps Up NetDynamics (07/01/98; 7:44 p.m. ET)
By Sergio G. Non, TechInvestor
techweb.com

"...NetDynamics, based in Palo Alto, Calif., had sales of $13.3 million in 1997..."

===================================================================

12.8 time sales is a high price to pay but they do get programmers and expertise. "...One of the "key objectives" in buying NetDynamics was to gain that software experience, Sun said..."

This purchase IMO should help SUNW maintain their 20% growth rate especially in years 1999 and 2000, when the JAVA software group must begin to contribute to the companies overall earnings.

According to this article, Sun buys Netdynamics because of the exploding application server market, although now Sun will compete with its traditional partners like IBM, oracle and Netscape in the application server market.

Can someone explain what is application server? Why is it an exploding market? What is its relation with Java?

Thanks in advance,
