Guatemala bans Viagra pending guarantees
Thursday July 2, 3:12 am Eastern Time

GUATEMALA CITY, July 2 (Reuters) - The Guatemalan health ministry has banned the anti-impotence drug Viagra from the country until tests guarantee it has no fatal effects, officials said.

''We are giving this order to ensure that under no circumstances this product enters the country, since we have no assurances it is not damaging,'' Health Minister Marco Tulio Sosa said late on Wednesday.

''Because of the 30 deaths that have occurred in the United States, probably because of taking Viagra, we have decided to prohibit the entry of this drug into Guatemala,'' he said, adding anyone breaking the order would be heavily fined.

The drug has caused an international sensation and rapidly become a bestseller in the United States and some Latin American countries where it is also available.

In the United States, more than a million men have been given prescriptions for the drug since it hit the market in April. About 30 deaths have been reported among men who take it. The deaths have not been linked directly to Viagra and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stresses that it thinks Viagra is safe when taken as directed.

So far no black market in the drug has emerged in Guatemala, although the authorities say they will remain vigilant. The drug is made by Pfizer Inc (PFE - news).
