I think you are hitting it right on. They should take what they have and expand the market into new products. If they just took the GX put it into 0.25 micron, jack up the CPU to 350-400Mhz and integrate LAN/modem functions they would have the basis for a real market niche. Plus the chip set would cost $10-20 in pqfp and they could get $40 for it all day long.

Playing catch up to kill Intel is a bad startegy IMHO. Either you come with something that is as high or higher perfomance as Intels top of line or you die.

If they had done this as a priority they would have the chip in production by now.

You raise some interesting points, and i most ly agree with you, however:

What's bad about the present situation, is that all of this needs huge R&D, and NSM has to be rationing their R&D dollars because of the slump they are in right now.

Well a lot of the current R&D spending should be drawing near to a close (for example Process development and sample runs through the portland fab, which eat money by the boat load). Besides they shouldn't need to much $$ for what you are looking at.
