Micron Selects 3Dfx Voodoo2 to Transform Home PCs Into 3D Gaming Machines

Voodoo2 Builds OEM Acceptance for 3Dfx Game Platform

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- 3Dfx Interactive(R), Inc. (Nasdaq: TDFX - news) today announced that Micron will adopt its Voodoo2(TM) chipset for 3D gaming as a part of Diamond Multimedia's 12MB Monster 3D II board, for select models of the Millennia line of high-end desktop PCs from Micron Electronics (Nasdaq: MUEI - news).

Rather than just serve as a PC graphics chipset, the Voodoo(TM) architecture is developed specifically for 3D gaming and to serve as the technology engine for a consumer 3D platform. Currently, over 250 3D games supporting the 3Dfx Interactive gaming platform are available from third-party software companies, including games developed exclusively for the 3Dfx platform. In addition, Voodoo2 has Microsoft WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) certification. Systems using 3Dfx's Voodoo2 can also display the Windows logo for promotional purposes.

''Micron has made the strongest choice in selecting Voodoo2 and Diamond's Monster 3D II board for its best desktop computers.'' said Greg Ballard, president of 3Dfx Interactive, Inc. ''The increasing acceptance of Voodoo2 by OEM system manufacturers is an indication of 3D gaming's growing momentum. The OEM market is an important avenue for continuing the dramatic growth of the 3Dfx PC game platform.''

3Dfx's Voodoo2 Chipset

The Voodoo2 chipset offers a ten-fold performance advantage over Nintendo 64, producing 3 million triangles per second and 90 million dual-textured, bilinear-filtered, per-pixel MIP-mapped, alpha-blended, Z-buffered pixels per second, over three times the performance of the original Voodoo Graphics(R) chipset. Serious gamers are also able to connect two cards to boost fill rate performance again by a factor of two.

Voodoo2 also contains a full floating-point hardware triangle setup unit for maximum triangle throughput on Pentium, Pentium Pro and Pentium II powered systems. Voodoo2 is an AGP-capable device designed to utilize the higher bandwidth available through AGP and will support 3D games with resolutions up to 1024 X 768. etc. etc.
