take our cars, spend money in gasoline, hope there's not much traffic, park it, move our atoms inside the store, search the aisles for 30 minutes hoping to find our book, which unless it's a best seller they probably don't have it , and then repeat the process to go back home.
so inefficient...

It's also called "life", i.e. part of having one, yah know?

it will be more like -> consumer-internet-manufacturer
and everything "build-to-order"
and as soon as there's large enough bandwidth via cable or satellite, we won't even have to
live in cities and go to work everyday in our cars, just work from our home/offices in an
island in the South Pacific or a ski resort.
go to a Barnes & Noble store to buy a book? sure! take our cars, spend money in gasoline,
hope there's not much traffic, park it, move our atoms inside the store, search the aisles for
30 minutes hoping to find our book, which unless it's a best seller they probably don't have
it , and then repeat the process to go back home.

Sure, you can imaging anyway you like and it probably will become true, but that will take time. Manhattan was bought from indians as an deserted island and it was transformed into one of the the world most expensive metropolitan area with real estate worth tens of billions dollar. The fact is, comparing to other investment, purchasing the Manhatton island was a stinky investment. If the Indians would invest the money they got from the seattlers with average return, they can buy back Manhattan island with San Fransisco as a bonus.
