I believe the Eastern Front was Hitler's ultimate undoing...but we DID NOT have to ally ourselves with Russia in order to garner the benefits that occurred.
Russia's history of invasion and repulsion in the face of extraordinary odds is well documented. They would have prevailed over Germany, regardless of US assistance.
Remember, invasions occur FROM the steppes into the West, not INTO the steppes from the West.
