COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 2, 1998--The CDMA Development Group
(CDG) Thursday released highlights from its highly successful Third Annual CDMA World
Congress held last week in Singapore.

Delivering the keynote address to more than 1,000 delegates, former Federal Communications
Commission (FCC) Chairman Reed Hundt shared his views on third generation (3G) issues.
Leading wireless authorities also discussed the rapid worldwide deployment of cdmaOne and its
acceptance as a global standard for digital wireless technology.

"The overwhelming response to the Third Annual CDMA World Congress clearly demonstrates the
industry's commitment to the progress of cdmaOne technology," said Perry LaForge, executive
director of the CDG. "The CDG was particularly pleased with Reed Hundt's advocacy of
harmonization on 3G standards issues and his support of open standards and free trade within the
global telecommunications environment."

Major announcements at the World Congress included the latest subscriber and operator counts for
cdmaOne, the fastest ever wireless technology to market:

-- 12.13 million cdmaOne worldwide subscribers with an expectation

that the number will surpass 18 million by December 1998.

-- More than 8.75 million subscribers in Asia.

-- More than 3.23 million subscribers in North America.

-- More than 130,000 subscribers in the Caribbean and South America.

-- More than 100 cdmaOne operators in commercial service or

deploying networks in 35 countries around the world.

Next year's World Congress will be held June 14-18, 1999, at the Hong Kong Convention and
Exhibition Center.

Additional Facts and Figures on CDMA

-- cdmaOne is the universal term for IS-95-based CDMA

specifications. The term serves as an umbrella for the worldwide

family of products that are based on the IS-95 air-interface,

namely wireless local loop, PCS and cellular technology.

cdmaOne Customer Satisfaction

-- In Japan, of 1,400 cdmaOne users surveyed, more than 80 percent

reported that cdmaOne had voice quality "as good or better" than

wireline.

-- In the United States, the consumer advocate group TRAC concluded

that cdmaOne was superior to competing digital technologies in

meeting consumer needs. Primary benefits included: superior voice

quality; superior reliability, with "soft-handoff" causing fewer

dropped calls; superior privacy and security; and longer battery

life and talk-time. cdmaOne Benefits

-- Wireless Local Loop: The current cdmaOne WLL network deployment

rate indicates the technology has emerged as the global WLL

standard. It is currently deployed in 18 countries. It will be

employed in 30 countries by year-end.

-- International Roaming: Asian and North American cdmaOne carriers

are already linked by agreements that allow seamless

international roaming between cdmaOne networks. South America

represents a huge potential market for such services. cdmaOne

carriers will benefit from increased revenues from international

roaming services.

-- Third Generation: The CDG announced major advances in the

capabilities of cdmaOne technology. As part of an aggressive

initiative, the CDG and its members will develop enhanced

capabilities and provide 3G services well in advance of the ITU's

IMT-2000 timeline.

The CDMA Development Group is a nonprofit trade association formed to foster the worldwide
development, implementation and use of cdmaOne. The 100 member companies of the CDG
include many of the world's largest wireless operators and equipment manufacturers.

The primary activities of the CDG include development of cdmaOne features and services, public
relations, education and seminars, regulatory affairs and international support. Currently, there are
more than 500 individuals working within various CDG subcommittees on cdmaOne-related
matters.
