Peter,

One minus for Datek is they don't trade options. If you don't use them Datek is very good overall.

Another one I use is E*Trade. They still seems to be in growing pains though. Yesterday they called to inform me that I needed to close a naked call position. Of course I had no naked call, in fact according to E*Trade no one does. It be just my luck to have E*Trade sell a naked call for me in AMZN and send me to the poor house. To their credit I actually had good, fast results from their customer service.

I have a no-fee IRA stock account with Tradestar (formerly Savoy), and they seem to be ok.

selecttrade.com

They do allow options. Had only one instance of a trade in a volatile stock not going through because they said my account didn't have enough for the trade (unlikely). It was just as well, because the stock I wanted to buy subsequently dropped like a rock.

On-line response time during trading hours could be better, but during peak times I have not found any of the on-line brokers to be fast enough for real-time trading. Day trading would be fine, though. Besides, Tradestar recently did a customer satisfaction survey and sent me a coffee mug for answering, so what more could I ask? They support normal accounts, margin accounts, options and quotes. Their IRAs, including regular, Roth and education IRAs, are no-fee. They send confirmations and statements, and they answer their e-mails and telephones if you have questions about a trade. Good luck. If you find a broker with lightning fast response time who also allows options, please let me know.
