Sony To Make PCs Core Of Its Product Line-up
MAKUHARI, Japan (Reuters) - Sony says it plans to make its popular Vaio series personal computers the core of its audio-visual product line-up.

"We are not planning to make profits out of hardware sales, " said Kunitake Ando, head of Sony's PC business unit Information and Technology.

"We hope our PC system Vaio works as a core in the total value chain of Sony's digital audio products," he said.

Ando delivered the keynote speech to kick off a four-day Windows World Expo in Tokyo.

Sony returned to the PC market, which it abandoned in the late 1980s, in Japan in July last year.

Since then, the Vaio-series notebook PCs, featuring easy- to-edit applications for motion pictures and Sony's audiovisual technology, have become popular, although Sony has kept its production low.

Sony has not disclosed the sales data, but media reports have put sales of its PCs so far in Japan at some 100,000 units.

Sony also recently announced it would also enter the European PC market.
