NN has two totally different lines of ATM equipment. The Vivid line that is intended to be used in LANs and the Mainstreet line that the carriers are using.

Stories about Newbridge's LANE implementation failing and never really working. And MPOA crashing when subject to IP multicast and other stress conditions. The Newbridge architecture is just about impossible to debug. Lots of anecdotes. One colleague who is very good with ATM switches says their basic design is suspect. I never worked with Newbridge switches myself, so I can't speak firsthand, but they have warned me to stay clear of Newbridge in the strongest terms.

From NN's website, dated 1995:
newbridge.com

I don't know how long the LANE implementation was used. From this article it appears it had problems from the start. It also appears it was a solution imposed by the ATM forum, not NN.

I could post awards won, but I think the recent $200M win from Energis validates the strength of NN's 36170 MainStreetX press solution.

Energis and Newbridge Sign New Five-Year Agreement Valued at Approximately $200 Million

SuperComm, ATLANTA, Georgia, June 11, 1998 -- Energis and Newbridge Networks today signed an agreement under which both companies will align their data networking strategies for the future. The agreement includes a contract valued at approximately $200 million for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching equipment and related services, as well as the formation of a five-year 'Partners in Data' agreement. This extends the two companies' existing three-year relationship in the development and deployment of advanced data services.

By working together on current and future products, Energis and Newbridge will ensure that the multiservice data network fully meets the service requirements of Energis' customers. Energis was the first carrier to launch an ATM service in the UK and has already deployed ATM and frame relay solutions for a broad range of customers, including The Mirror Group, Boots, and the BBC's digital television network.
