Jeff, supposedly Bill and some others on this page are convinced that the consumer is rushing retail outlets for Win98. Bill also figures that the entire population has the money to turn over their home PC every 2 years. I personally know a vast majority of fellow middle-income earners that have MUCH higher priorities in their home expenses than upgrading their PC hardware because of Win98 or to spend $90 on an upgraded OS with minor enhancements more geared for the latest hardware.

Sorry Bill, the whole world doesnt change their Home PCs like they change their shorts. I know that companies like MSFT and Intel do everything in their power to sell each other's products. Afterall, why do you think NT is such a pig on systems - because it strongly encourages companies to buy larger fast machines. I can run NetWare 4.11 on a 486/66 and 32MB RAM and still support 100+ people. NT would barely be able to boot with this config.

Sorry Bill, with thes exception of a small pent up new PC demand as a result of Win98, the sales will very quickly (and likely is already) sag as the consumers stay with their Win95. We also know that the VAST MAJORITY of businesses will not be touching Win98.

Almost all the industry media is unanimous on their reporting that Win98 is a no-big-deal release that most customers of Win95 wont bite on. The news report that Jeff posted is only one of many that have all send the same thing. The last PCWeek had a complete special edition that made it very clear - Win98 is not worth it!

So, Bill I guess we all will see very shortly who is right about Win98 sales.
