Back to Iomega...the company.

I had an interesting conversation with my brother-in-law...that I thought brought the "real world" reaction to a problem to my attention. His reaction, and acceptance, regarding a problem with a possibly defective Zip drive was so different than the scenarios described or imagined by many of the posters here.

My brother-in-law, who I will call JT, purchased a Zip drive two years ago. JT is an ex-marine, MBA, works in manufacturing and is quite computer literate....he is also a pretty aggressive guy. He described the malfunctioning of his drive to me and damage to 2 of his disks. I said to him, "oh you mean the click of death". JT's response, to paraphrase, what the hell are you talking about?!. I explained the history of the problem, the availability of tech support and the strong possibility of free replacement. His reaction..."great!".

You see he wasn't pissed-off at the company, he wasn't soured on the company, he was going to buy another Zip. He had over 2 years of good service and then had a problem. He is in manufacturing and knows that not every item produced is perfect and things happen. Now he wasn't happy about it, but he wasn't unhappy enough not to try Zip again, before I told him he may be in better shape than he thought.

That is a "real world" reaction to a problem. It may not be a IOM stocktrader's reaction, a techie's reaction, or an internet junkie's reaction...but, it was one from a guy that had a job to do.

Just something to think about.
