Subject: Sharing a Modem
There are a lot more programs available for sharing a modem on a network than I realized. Tucows at tucows.ionet.net lists 18 programs that enable modem sharing and rates the programs from 3 1/2 cows to 5 cows. Top rated by Tucows are WinProxy by LanProjekt for $99, WinGate for cost varies and Rideway for $30.

Note on terminology. technically the software listed there is not modem sharing in the typical sense of the word but proxy/socks/NAT software for sharing a PPP connection. Traditional modem sharing software allows multiple users to access modems on a network from traditional comm programs like qmodem or procomm, from online services, like AOL, Alpha Paging software, and fax software. Many of the socks/proxy servers do not require a modem at and can work as a gateway between two ethernet segements or some other for of mac/physical layer connection. BTW: wingate works quite nicely with @home cable modem.....
