Meathead,
Hi!! << The bigger question would be "when" will Dell's growth
slow in the region by way of business segment saturation
where the price sensitive consumer base is needed to
support growth? This situation is easily monitored
qtr to qtr. Data suggests that there is lots of headroom
left before this situation occurs>>

Dell building in Brazil...what might this suggest?

Best, Kemble

Meathead: <<Latin America represents 5% of the total PC market. Q1,
Year over year Compaq has grown it's shipments into this
region by 17% while Dell has grown theirs by 60% and
they've managed to do this without a sub 1k consumer offering.>>

the situation in Latin America and Europe reminds me of those dog races in Canada spanning over the 500 and 1200 mile ranges. none of the best mushers want to take the lead in the race early on as they must break trail through sometimes piling snow and other harsh conditions for the other mushers, thus wearying their team more than necessary. it's also the trail breakers that end up making most of the mistakes on rougher terrain. so it is in business in emerging markets. Dell has every opportunity to learn from the prevailing competition and eat up the trail from behind - a trail the competition is attempting to blaze. first to market is rarely a blessing in emerging markets. an example would be the battle fought between summitt technology (BEAM) and VISX. look at their stock prices.
