Craig, I am from the Canon and Minolta schools and have already sent e-mail off to Canon asking whether they would consider making a camera back with a CCD sensor and a CF slot for storage. No response yet. It would save alot of people the expense of investing in a digital SLR camera and having to outfit with lenses and the like all over again. For the time being point-and-shoot is the only affordable option. In order to get a better idea about digital photography I bought an Epson PhotoPC 600 with 1024 x 768 resolution yielding about 800,000 pixels per image. It is o.k. for macros and portraits, but not pleasing for longer distances. I have a 15 MB SanDisk CF card which holds 31 high resolution images. I also bought a card reader (SanDisk Imagemate) because I don't own a laptop and the serial cable is too slow for uploading. The package comes with a photo editing software package. I also downloaded an screen saver from the web which plays a slide show of my favorite images (my kids) when my PC is idle. I am waiting at least one year before even considering an SLR camera. The Olympus 600L has excellent reviews, but it is just a cheap piece of plastic with a $1,000.00 price tag soon to be out classed. They are probably going to milk the point-and-shoot business for a while until prices come down to earth, then start in with SLR cameras for those non-professionals with a bit more interest in the finer aspects of photography. I went into Ritz camera today. They have SanDisk 15 MB CF cards for $119.95 and Simple Technology (Lexar) 16 MB cards for 159.99. Not much of a decision there. The also reduced the price on the Kodak DC 200 (no zoom capability) which is a megapixel camera and is priced at $499.00. Personally, I would like to see the DC 260 when it hits the shelf. I also visit CompUSA quite often. They had an array of CF cards from various manufacturers 3 weeks ago. This included the 48 MB SanDisk cards and, if I recall correctly, Viking and PNY products. When I went in earlier this week they were sold out. Bare shelves. The sales guy (who recognizes me now) was flabbergasted because sales are apparently ramping up fairly quickly, although you can never be certain with an informal survey like that. If you would like a sample photo please send me a private message and I will do my best to e-mail one over. Trust me that digital photography is contagious. Like eating the first potato chip out of a bag. (You could easily do 40 shots in an afternoon!!!) Aus
