Don't know about mercury Bill but I recall reading a few years back that due to loss of human native life, piranha were removed from many of the tributaries of the amazon river. The resulting pollution from the decay of dead animals falling into the waters promoted the restoration of the piranha. There are no shortcuts when dealing with
creation! User pays.

Anaerobically at river bottoms some biota in some conditions make
loads of methyl mercury. this is the Minamata bay problem and the
CDN river problem. The anaerobic conditions are caused by slowly rotting wood pulp and the presence to H2SO4 which deoxygenates the
river and its bottom. Also summer conditions in stagnant lakes
cause deoxy conditions. There is much natural mercury in the
shield volcanic rocks.
