Tellabs Inc. Tops in Non-Financial Factors
NEW YORK (July 6) BUSINESS WIRE -July 6, 1998--One hundred buy-and-sell-side analysts ranked Tellabs Inc. first on the 1998 Hidden Value(TM) Index of telecommunications equipment manufacturers, a proprietary study conducted annually by CDB Research & Consulting Inc. The company received the highest score of any telecommunications equipment manufacturer in six of the eight non-financial factors contained on the index. Given Tellabs' consistent performance in non-financial areas, it comes as no surprise that analysts rated the company 20% higher this year than in 1997.
In a move that did surprise many analysts, Lucent Technologies fell from first place on last year's index to seventh place this year, demonstrating that a company's ability to communicate the significance of research and development to investors is often as crucial as the nature of the research itself. According to analysts who participated in the study, Lucent needs to improve its investor relations practices in order to capitalize on the company's research and development capabilities.

"We spoke to several analysts who regularly attend events sponsored by the research and development team at Lucent," said Dr. Larry Chiagouris, managing director of CDB Research & Consulting. "These analysts felt that the company does not present new product information in terms investors can easily understand. Analysts who follow equipment manufacturers on an exclusive basis aren't going to understand a product's broader implications for sales after a three minute presentation." 1998 Hidden Value(TM) Index Top Ten Telecommunications Manufacturers 1) Tellabs Inc. 2) Northern Telecom Ltd. 3) ADC Telecommunications 4) Network Equipment Technologies 5) General Instrument 6) DSC Communications 7) Lucent Technologies 8) 3Com Corporation 9) QUALCOMM, Inc. 10) Ascend Communications

Created in 1995, the Hidden Value(TM) Index quantifies the relationship between a company's reputation and its worth. The telecommunications study includes long distance carriers, competitive local exchange carriers and equipment manufacturers. The Hidden Value(TM) study asks 100 buy-and-sell-side analysts to rate telecommunications companies they follow on the eight non-financial criteria listed below: 1) Concern for and relations with its employees 2) Ability to reduce costs 3) Ability to avoid regulatory problems 4) Ability to increase revenue 5) Customer satisfaction and loyalty 6) The brand equity of the company and its products 7) Ability to increase productivity 8) Research & development, intellectual capital and ability to innovate
