Found it Bachman...

<<Dell Computer Swims Directly To Deep End >>
An interview with IBD

Date: 7/1/98

IBD:

What does the entrance into enterprise computing mean to your company?

Dell:

Dell's been growing quickly across its entire business, but that's been most obvious in the server and enterprise business. Last quarter, the enterprise business grew (about) 180%. With the new products, we are broadening the breadth of the market we can cover.

We're doing all this by bringing unparalleled efficiency and value to
the market using our direct model. That's why you see Dell growing at
five times the growth rate of the market. >>

I must have had a brain cramp when I originally read this, but it now seems clear that MD is only talking about 5x the enterprise market growth rate, and not the market growth rate in general (although he does mention both "markets" in his answer, so I have a little bit of an excuse!)

My apologies to the thread (Anyway, I took it to mean 5x times 10-11% = 55% which would be historically OK, but now (of course) come to think of it, MD always uses around 15% for the overall PC market growth rate, and not 10-11% that one of the big data gathering groups (I forget which) has recently predicted..

Sorry again for the confusion...Good work Bachman!
