I have cable modem and was informed by the technician who installed it that it functions like a cable channel. If it gets overcrowded it is very simple for them to open another channel. BTW, it is very fast, always on, and the service is far more reliable than my previous phone service. IMHO, I think the telephone companies are too sluggish, accustomed to dealing in a monopoly world where your relationship with regulators is more important than dealing with customers, and by the time they finally get DSL, it will be too late for most areas of the country. Cable goes by at least 70 % of the homes in the US, and their technology is ready now in many areas. it took my carrier (Intermedia) less than a year to bring their system up to over 100 channels and to be internet ready. DFSL will likely win in some areas where the cable companies are asleep, but the bulk of the business will go to the cable guys.
