Dwight, I think that a lot of Americans believe that Manifest Destiny was a very good plan. These are the same people who "in the name of God" settled this place, and ruined it to some degree for people who are more concerned about all peoples, not just white Christians.

When I said there were no Indians in San Francisco, I obviously meant that the tribe who lived here has been decimated and sent to live on a reservation. There are some Indian street people here, mostly alcoholic and addicted to drugs. There are lots of non-Indian Americans who do believe they got a really rotten deal. But these are "liberals" and I don't suspect you have much interaction with them. I would definitely support any plan to compensate Indians with more of America than we gave them. We don't even have to disrupt anyone else's lives, since much of the empty, wild and beautiful areas of America are still owned by the U.S. government. And in areas where they are not, land could be purchased under imminent domain laws. I also think that it would be very simple to improve health care, education and nutrition for Indians on the reservations. We could provide scholarships for more Indians to go to college as well. I would like to pay more taxes so that these programs could be enacted.

These are concrete ideas, and could be easily accomplished. Certainly, apologizing for past wrongs helps healing, but does not go very far in solving real inequities. I am not sure why you think liberals just say things to make themselves feel better, but I suspect is it just a way to bash them unfairly.

In answer to your question, incidentally, I would be much more interested in continuing to live in the United States if it were a more compassionate place, and particularly if we acknowledged as a nation our past transgressions on the Indian and slavery issues.
