scba,

IMO, announcements are OK once, but to come back and say 1998 will be a total wash proves to me management doesn't have a handle on the situation. How many more stumbles are shareholders going to endure while they try to integrate DEC? How many more quarters do shareholders have to endure no earnings (or even losses)?

Earnings projections last month:

Just after buying DEC, it [Compaq] said it expected to report break-even earnings in the second quarter and face a "transitional" third quarter before DEC started adding to earnings in the fourth quarter of this year.

Earnings projection last week:

...Compaq Chief Executive Eckhard Pfeiffer said he expects to show a net loss for 1998 due to the large charges, which include a $3-billion write-off on process technology, and a $1.7-billion restructuring charge....

...Given the magnitude of the restructuring charge we are taking, it will make the year negative, but you have to look at the difference between net and operating results," Pfeiffer told a news conference...
