Happy Fourth to you, too, Penni! I got up at 5:45 this morning to catch up around SI, and find my quick and easy watermelon cake recipe from childhood to share with you, because I felt sorry for you that you have to make those watermelon cookies, which sound like they take about eight hours. I looked everywhere and it is missing--I guess I left it behind at my mother's house with my unhappy childhood. But it was a sponge cake baked in a metal bowl, green sponge cake batter around the bowl, then red batter filling up the middle, dotted with chocolate chips. It was served on a plate with darker green frosting around the rounded part, sitting there like a half a watermelon! If anyone has heard of this recipe and can post it to me, I would really appreciate it, although I know the chances are slim. Anyway, after looking at recipes for about an hour, and giving up, I logged on and only got a few messages answered before I got stuck. I was looking for some Greatful Dead actually playing over the computer, to send back to August, when I realized with a start that I had planned absolutely nothing for my own Fourth of July celebration. I inquired earlier in the week, and everyone wanted to rent videos and lie around, which usually is pretty fun, but after seeing all those fireworks blasting out of my computer, I got in the spirit and realized I wanted more, more, more. So I dashed off to the store, and now we are having Polish sausages on sourdough rolls, homemade potato salad, mesquite barbecue chips, and sliced sweetened strawberries with whipped cream over lemon angelfood cake. Nothing like your elaborate dishes, but it's easy and I don't want to spend the whole day in the kitchen. We are getting ready to dash out and go down the coast to a beach town where fireworks are legal so that we can buy some and break the law like everyone else does by setting them off in our backyard at sunset. Whee!! The moral of this story is that while I am still way behind on reading and answering posts, I realized that I was about to experience the holiday vicariously, sitting at my computer, which is one of the addiction danger signs, definitely. So the posts will have to wait until later when my family is watching a movie I don't want to see. In the meantime, have a wonderful day with your families, Penni and everyone else!
