That is the big question mark. As a society, the deadline certainly won't be met(can you name a major project in human history that has met deadlines set for it? ex: Construction of English Channel). North America and Europe are the most information-dependent nations in the world, and therefore have the most to lose. But they are further ahead than Asia, for whom y2k is the least of worries right now. Some Asian countries aren't that dependent on info tech, but places like HK & Japan are. No one can say for certain what the exact consequences will be, but my feeling is that they might not be too pretty.
