Tellabs Inc. Tops in Non-Financial Factors
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 6, 1998--One hundred buy-and-sell-side analysts ranked Tellabs Inc. [Nasdaq:TLAB - news] first on the 1998 Hidden Value(TM) Index of telecommunications equipment manufacturers, a proprietary study conducted annually by CDB Research & Consulting Inc. The company received the highest score of any telecommunications equipment manufacturer in six of the eight non-financial factors contained on the index. Given Tellabs' consistent performance in non-financial areas, it comes as no surprise that analysts rated the company 20% higher this year than in 1997.

In a move that did surprise many analysts, Lucent Technologies fell from first place on last year's index to seventh place this year, demonstrating that a company's ability to communicate the significance of research and development to investors is often as crucial as the nature of the research itself. According to analysts who participated in the study, Lucent needs to improve its investor relations practices in order to capitalize on the company's research and development capabilities.

''We spoke to several analysts who regularly attend events sponsored by the research and development team at Lucent,'' said Dr. Larry Chiagouris, managing director of CDB Research & Consulting. ''These analysts felt that the company does not present new product information in terms investors can easily understand. Analysts who follow equipment manufacturers on an exclusive basis aren't going to understand a product's broader implications for sales after a three minute presentation.''

1998 Hidden Value(TM) Index Top Ten Telecommunications Manufacturers

1) Tellabs Inc. 2) Northern Telecom Ltd [NYSE:NT - news]. 3) ADC Telecommunications 4) Network Equipment Technologies 5) General Instrument 6) DSC Communications 7) Lucent Technologies 8) 3Com Corporation 9) QUALCOMM, Inc. 10) Ascend Communications

Created in 1995, the Hidden Value(TM) Index quantifies the relationship between a company's reputation and its worth. The telecommunications study includes long distance carriers, competitive local exchange carriers and equipment manufacturers. The Hidden Value(TM) study asks 100 buy-and-sell-side analysts to rate telecommunications companies they follow on the eight non-financial criteria listed below:

1) Concern for and relations with its employees 2) Ability to reduce costs 3) Ability to avoid regulatory problems 4) Ability to increase revenue 5) Customer satisfaction and loyalty 6) The brand equity of the company and its products 7) Ability to increase productivity 8) Research & development, intellectual capital and ability to

innovate

Nortel (Northern Telecom), Mobility Canada Demonstrate Fastest Data Rate on Commercial IS-95 cdmaOne System
TORONTO, July 6 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel (Northern Telecom) (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL) today publicly demonstrated that high-speed delivery of data over wireless networks can be accomplished using existing cdmaOne networks.

Nortel, along with wireless operator Bell Mobility, a Mobility Canada member company, will demonstrate high-speed circuit switched Internet access at speeds up to 57.6 kilobits per second over Bell Mobility's commercial CDMA network from a terminal at the Comdex technology exposition in Toronto, July 8-10, 1998. Until now, no cdmaOne infrastructure vendor has publicly displayed data delivery over IS-95 networks at speeds higher than 14.4 kbps.

''High-speed wireless data capability will allow us to meet the needs of our most demanding customers as well as differentiate ourselves from other operators who have less robust data offerings,'' said Brian O'Shaughnessy, vice-president, technology development, Bell Mobility. ''Especially attractive is the ability to provide customers with wireless data solutions over our current CDMA voice network.''

This high-speed data initiative is a part of a $Cdn 60 million research program announced earlier this year by Mobility Canada. Under this initiative, Nortel and Mobility Canada will pursue the development of multimedia services and applications. This demonstration further supports Nortel's commitment to webtone and the advancement of wireless IP networks. Nortel recently announced it would conduct 3G trials in 1998, which will allow for even faster data rates while protecting an operator's current infrastructure investment.

Nortel CDMA digital wireless networks are in service or under construction in more than 80 cities around the world, serving more than a million subscribers. Nortel, in 18 months of production, has shipped more than 5,000 base stations from its wireless manufacturing facility in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Mobility Canada brings together wireless companies, including Bell Mobility, from across Canada, to provide service under the Mobility umbrella. Offering Canadians national service on a regional basis, Mobility Canada is a market leader in wireless communication solutions, including cellular, PCS, wireless data and satellite services.

Bell Mobility provides a complete range of wireless communications solutions - cellular, one- and two-way paging, data, satellite, PCS and airline passenger communications services to more than 1.7 million Canadian customers. Bell Mobility companies are subsidiaries of BCE Mobile Communications Inc. [NYSE:BCX - news], a publicly traded company (TSE, ME, NYSE; stock symbol BCX) which is 65% owned by BCE Inc [NYSE:BCE - news].

Nortel had 1997 revenues of $US 15.5 billion and has approximately 73,000 employees worldwide.
