Mark, Of course, I should have realized your intent. In your example the enterprise substitutes for the ISP, and becomes the SP equivalent.

In any event VDSL is not intended for central office deployments due to average distances exceeding the reach of the service. It is better suited for implementation at the pedestal level in the neighborhood, as a means of multimedia distribution, a la cable TV delivery, standard POTS, IP and ATM services. But then, you knew that already. FWIW,

Frank

[symmetric vdsl]

Hi Mark,

interesting discussion, and regarding symetric vdsl, believe dt is trialing it now, ran across the following orctf misc. recently...

from p 4 of orctf overview from investor rel package 5/98:

"vdsl innovations

orckit has been the first to demonstrate vdsl over isdn, using an isdn splitter. This new feature allows telecom operators to deploy vdsl over their existing isdn infrastructure.

in response to requests from customers, orckit has also developed symmetric vdsl, that can transmit at 13 Mbps symmetrically over a single twisted pair. This symmetric vdsl can be deployed with a regular pots splitter, for lifeline telephone service simultaneously with data access, for a distance of up to 600 m.

orckit is already supplying vdsl modems with these new features to a western european telecom operator."

believe the european telecom operator mentioned is deutsche telecom with whom fujitsu ltd and orctf recently won a small contract for vdsl... my guess is that it is part of the fsan alliance "Telco Trials Jun-Dec 98"... these guys (fsan) look pretty organized.

fsan: an interesting website to poke around in:
