pigboy - Re: "Do you think CPQ trying to go more with
Alpha in the high end (perhaps a lot like how they are trying for as much AMD as they can get in the low end) will be more of a detriment to CPQ or to Intel? "

When Compaq bought Digital, one of the elements they bought was the Alpha and DEC's existing customers for the Alpha. By virtue of DEC's history, these customers tend to be high end customers.

Compaq needs to keep these customers - and providing them with new or updated Alha machines is a requirement. Compaq wants to break into that high end and Alpha-based systems are their entry point. Let's face it - there is no Merced alternative and the XEON may be great but Intel managed to insure the launch of this chip was botched from the get-go.

So, expect Compaq to service their high end customers with Alpha machines until they have a better platform (Xeon or Merced) - but for now, it's Alpha.
