MSB:

I don't know about food in California. But I was in San Diego recently and I do understand that Real Estate is booming. In Maryland where I live, it is creeping up in value in California, I understand the gains are in some case double digit in a month. There is a saying that California leads the nation and I think housing is the best indicator of inflation. There are a lot of arguments for the deflationary scenario, but the situation in California is an argument for the inflationary scenario.

Live long and prosper,

Little joe

MSB,
Many of the price changes are hidden by packaging changes.16 oz.bags of potato chips are now 14 oz. and Cambell soups previously selling in 16 oz. cans are now purchased in 11 oz. cans.I guess reducing the quantity purchased doesn't matter to our government statisticians.

Fast to save country money, says leader
By Alex Spillius, South East Asia Correspondent

telegraph.co.uk

PRESIDENT B J Habibie has astounded Indonesians by calling on them to
fast two days a week to save the nearly bankrupt country money on rice
imports.

At a commemoration of the birth of Prophet Mohammed, Mr Habibie said his
Islamic compatriots should follow the Prophet's example and improve
"blood circulation and the mind" by fasting on Mondays and Thursdays. He
said: "If families fast, the Indonesian people's devoutness to God will
improve for more effective and efficient work."

But according to official estimates, 40 per cent of the 202 million
population are below the poverty line, and are unable to afford food for
sufficient diet. The financial crisis, which has already put Indonesia
back 20 years, is predicted to worsen. Rice, the staple diet, is all
many of the poor can afford, even though its cost has risen by 50 per
cent since the economy began to collapse.

Mr Habibie has now calculated that as each person eats an average 200
grams of rice a day, then if 150 million fasted two days a week, three
million tonnes of rice would be saved in a year - the same amount
Indonesia has to import in 1998.
