leading standards-based server vendor. The company announced new models of the Compaq ProLiant 7000 and the Compaq ProLiant 6000 servers will be available concurrent with the release of Intel's
Pentium II Xeon processor. These servers take full advantage of the performance gains possible in systems with up to four Intel Pentium II Xeon processors at 400 MHz. Ideal for business-critical databases
and enterprise-wide database applications, the new Compaq servers feature a high performance, cable-free, three-channel intelligent array controller, an enhanced PCI Hot Plug implementation and faster
PCI system architecture - standards-based technology enhancements that offer customers greater scalable performance, ease of use and investment protection.

Balanced System Eliminates Performance Bottlenecks
The servers' three PCI buses and 64-bit PCI slots can double the bandwidth to storage, network and peripheral devices. These features complement the new three-channel array controller to eliminate system
bottlenecks and provide Compaq servers with a balanced architecture that can take full advantage of the performance gains from the system's Pentium II Xeon processors.
Under industry standard benchmarks(1), the ProLiant 7000 exceeded the performance of eight-way Pentium Pro servers by up to 13 percent. Demonstrating its superior database performance, a ProLiant
7000 with four 400 MHz Pentium II Xeon processors with 1 MB of cache memory achieved 18,127.4 transactions per minute (tpmC) at just $26.10/tpmC under the TPC-C benchmark running Microsoft SQL
Server 7.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0 and 1694.6 QppD with 553.1 QthD at just $390.65/QphD for a 100GB database under the TPC-D benchmark running Oracle 8.0.4 and Windows NT 4.0. The ProLiant
7000 set a world record for SAP R/3 performance on the Windows NT platform at 2,288 SD running the Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 database application. The ProLiant 7000 also set a world record for Baan at

Intelligent Array Controller Provides High Performance and Fault-Tolerance
Available as standard equipment on the Compaq ProLiant 7000, and optional on the Compaq ProLiant 6000 servers, is a new, high performance, fault-tolerant, three-channel intelligent array controller to give customers continuous, robust access to critical data. The controller's cable-free connections greatly
simplify the PCI Hot Plug card installation and replacement.
The controller provides three Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 channels and enables up to 18 disk drives attached across the three SCSI channels to be configured as one single 218 GB volume - maximizing server
storage expansion. The enhanced array controller offers 64 MB of read/write cache, greatly boosting I/O and storage subsystem performance without sacrificing data integrity.
Push-Button PCI Hot Plug Gives Customers Greater Flexibility
Nearly one year ago, Compaq raised the fault tolerant capabilities of industry-standard servers to a new
level by introducing servers featuring the standards-based PCI Hot Plug technology pioneered by
Compaq. The new Compaq ProLiant 7000 and Compaq ProLiant 6000 provide customers with an
enhanced, easier-to-use Push-Button PCI Hot Plug technology. By pressing a button over any of the
server's nine PCI Hot Plug slots, customers can now quickly upgrade, replace and add PCI adapters. This
second-generation Push-Button PCI Hot Plug technology greatly simplifies hot plug peripheral
administration by permitting in-box slot management, as opposed to remote-only management.
Compaq Offers Customers Greater Investment Protection
Incorporating emerging technologies like 64-bit PCI slots into its servers before they become a market
requirement is an example of the attention Compaq places on preserving the value of its customers'
technology investment. In August 1997, Compaq announced a program enabling customers to upgrade
the Pentium Pro processors in their ProLiant 7000 servers to Pentium II Xeon processors. Today, the
upgrade program for the ProLiant 7000 is the only one of its kind in the industry. The program will provide
in-chassis upgrades of ProLiant 7000 with either Pentium Pro or Pentium II Xeon processors for up to
eight Pentium II Xeon processors without replacing customers' existing systems - preserving system serial
numbers, maximizing customers' investment protection and lowering their cost of ownership.
Higher Levels of Data Availability
The Compaq ProLiant 7000 and Compaq ProLiant 6000 have earned a reputation in the industry for
delivering uncompromising levels of data availability that companies need to run their business-critical
software applications with confidence - seven-days-a-week, 24-hours-a-day. In addition to the servers'
vast array of available redundant components including NICs, processor power modules, hot plug system
fans and hot plug power supplies, they now also offer the fault tolerance of the new three-channel intelligent
array controller to further prevent system downtime. The servers come with Compaq's hardware parts
warranty protection for three full years and pre-failure protection for processors, memory and disk drives to
help eliminate unplanned downtime. The Compaq ProLiant 7000 warranty protection includes a four hour
response time.
For customers seeking the additional availability provided by clustering, Compaq addresses individual
points of failure through hardware fault tolerance, component redundancies and support for application
failover with Compaq Recovery Server Option, Microsoft Cluster Server, Oracle, Tandem Eclipse and
future Novell clustering software.

The chassis design of both the ProLiant 7000 and ProLiant 6000 allows for large amounts of modular I/O,
internal storage, memory and processor expansion, enabling customers to quickly and easily expand their
servers to maximize the value of their investment. The servers feature highly expandable memory
configurations of up to 8 GB; 10 I/O slots, including one ISA modem slot and nine Push-Button PCI Hot
Plug slots, all of which support Push-Button PCI Hot Plug. They offer support for up to 18 disk drives and
allow up to 218.4 GB of internal storage, which can be configured as a single virtual volume when used
