Great Wall is working on a single chip VCD Player. Servo CD controler, MPEG controler.................. (A new chip is sampling) VCD players New designs add value Hong Kong manufacturers are working to make up for the lack of new features by introducing novel housing designs, pursuing more cost-cutting measures and promoting the quality of their processes and end products. Great Wall is set to launch two models with wooden paneling on both sides. The company is currently promoting nine models, including single-disc units and three-disc changers, all of which accept CD-DA and VCD 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 software.Lam said that apart from developing a single microcontroller for its VCD players, the company is not investing in any further product development of the line. "Most, if not all, of the VCD players on the market have two microcontrollers -- one for the CD servo and another for the MPEG decoder," he said. "Installing a single microcontroller will lower costs and give us a competitive edge." According to Lam, VCD players have matured in four phases. "We've passed all four stages and actually have three-disc VCD changers," he said. "But we are not developing versions capable of carrying more than three discs." Great Wall produces 20,000 VCD players per month, accounting for 10 percent to 20 percent of its total production. The company mainly promotes its VCD players in China under the Rowa and Caixing brand names, but executive director Brenda Tse said the maker is expanding its international scope. To ensure product quality, Great Wall implements strict QC, starting from the component sourcing stage. "We also get market feedback on our products and accept customer specifications regarding new features, if there are any," Lam said. Great Wall manufactures to AQL 1.0 major and 1.5/2.5 minor standards, but customers can request AQL 0.65 major and 1.0 minor standards. The company sources MPEG decoders from the United States (Made in Tiawan) and passive components from China and local suppliers. Yanion is experimenting with a mixed square/round housing design, focusing on high-quality but low-cost VCD players and models with surround sound amplifiers that are compatible with home theater packages. The maker has its own R&D team and produces to AQL 6.0 major and 2.5 minor standards. Major components come from Japan, Korea and the United States, and testing equipment is imported from Japan, Korea and Taiwan. The 10 models from Yanion are shipped with either a three-disc, five-disc or 100-disc changer. Buyers can choose between an LCD and a VFD, between VCD 1.1 and 2.0 formats, and between digital-servo and analog-servo reception. The difference in price is 15 percent. Karaoke functions increase the price by 5 percent. Yanion claims to be the first company in Hong Kong and China to produce VCD players, and reports sales of 15 million units in 1997. Sixty percent of its output is dedicated to OEM and ODM projects. - Asian Sources Electronics
