Looks like we agree on some things and others.

I love Branagh as well, with Henry V at the top of the list. I was a little put off by some of the minor character casting, especially Jack Lemon, but not enough to be really upset. I actually liked the casting of Charlton Heston as one of the players in Hamlet.

I have to disagree with you about Richard III. In the past I have always taken the same side of the debate as you have but this version of Richard III really changed my mind. I thought the acting was tremendous. The change of context really bought an interesting perspective to the play and breathed new life into what had been a middle of the pack play for me (middle of the Shakespearean pack that is). It has become one of my favorite versions and have seen it at least a half dozen times, and will watch it again.

But as I said, in the past I would usually argue against taking Shakespeare, or Wagner, out of context but I think this shows that if you get the right setting it can work very well.

BTW as to opera, I am much more of a fan of the Italians than of Wagner.

I also missed DiCaprio in Romeo and Juliet. If I want to watch treacle I'll watch Love Story
