I guess it is all how the particular version strikes you. I study history activelly myself and the War of the Roses era was fascinating. And like you I am usually very picky about context. There was just something about this Richard III that really struck me. Maybe it was the top notch acting. Or maybe it was something about the Olivier version that always left me flat.

I haven't seen the Mazursky Tempest but will look for it.
