I just checked a couple of sites and the opera in Room With A View is definitely Puccini. Music was used from two operas Gianni Schicchi which is one of the three operas that make up Il Trittico and La Rondine. If the particular piece you heard was from Gianni Schicchi it has to be 'Mia Bambina Carra'. BTW my spelling is atrocious. 'Carra' is the only aria from Gianni Schicchi that is ever played anywhere. It is on many people's top 10 all time favorite operas. The rest of the opera is very forgettable. I am not as familiar with La Rondine. By the way if it is 'Carra' I am personaly very impressed with my getting it on the first guess, even if I do say so myself :)

Also if the song you heard in Washington Square had the same music but repeated "my beloved" it was probably an english translation of 'Carra'
