Don,

If one is going to short the stock itself then the calls are a better deal in that one is picking up a lot of time value with the option where as the stock sold short will loose dollar for dollar as it goes up! With the internet stocks it is both dangerous to sell short the calls and the stock IMO if one does not have the ability to hold on if it goes against you!
