Lucent sets up China software centre

BEIJING, July 7 (Reuters) - Lucent Technologies Inc has set up a technical centre in Beijing to develop communications software, a company spokesman said on Tuesday.
Lucent would invest more than 200 million yuan ($24.1 million) in communications software development at the centre over the next three years, said Bo-ning Yang, public relations manager for Lucent Technologies China.

The new centre was a part of Bell Laboratories, Lucent's research and development arm, he told Reuters.

Lucent said last month it had signed three contracts with Chinese partners, including an $11 million deal with Guangdong Post and Telecommunications Administration for local transmission equipment.

The contracts, signed days before U.S. President Bill Clinton's visit to China, also included a $40 million letter of intent with China Telecom for the purchase of telephone transmission equipment, and an $11 million agreement with China Telecom and a Shanghai firm for an optic cable trunk line, it said.

Lucent has six joint ventures and two wholly-owned units manufacturing telecommunications equipment in China, it said.
