MSWin has several incestuous varieties of slope-based trendlines, Ken, which are sometimes preferred to MAs because they track changes faster.

Chandre makes an argument that the square of the LS correlation coefficient, r^2, is preferable to ADX as a measure of volatility.
(r is given by -Sx/(S*Sxx)^0.5.)

Ken, I like to see the 21 day slope trending up for entry (and start to trend down for exit)--it's just one indicator that you can throw into a scan to disqualify stocks. I would not use it alone to make trading decisions.
