Positive or negative for MRVC Intel And Level One Work Together To Speed Adoption Of Gigabit E hernet Technology Leaders Combine Efforts to Enable Higher Speed Networking Over Copper Wiring HILLSBORO, Ore., July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Intel Corporation and Level One Communications (Nasdaq: LEVL) today announced they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that outlines their plans to help advance the adoption of Gigabit Ethernet technology. The plan includes intentions to work together to enhance industry specifications and introduce complimentary Gigabit Ethernet products designed for Category 5 copper wiring. Products resulting from this initiative will help enable customers to more affordably transmit data at faster Gigabit Ethernet networking speeds and will help companies protect their existing network investments. "Category 5 copper wiring makes up the majority of the installed network cabling in the world," said Mark Christensen, vice president and general manager, Intel's Network Products Division. "The goal of this initiative is to help make Gigabit Ethernet an affordable option for all businesses." As more advanced processors are made available, PC users have access to ever-increasing performance and capabilities. Much of this processor power remains untapped if the network between users is not operating at compatible speeds. Level One and Intel believe Gigabit Ethernet can improve networking communication by helping users achieve a consistent balance between their PCs, servers and network hardware. "Level One's expertise in mixed signal and Optimal Signal Processing (OSP), technologies, combined with Intel's expertise in networking silicon innovation, will help provide customers with easier, more affordable access to Gigabit Ethernet," said Bob Pepper, president and CEO, Level One Communications. "Our joint efforts are designed to help businesses save millions in upgrade costs." The companies, both with active representatives in the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), plan to develop, demonstrate and market Gigabit Ethernet products designed for copper-based, Category 5 wiring that will meet IEEE 802.3ab industry specifications. Earlier this year, Intel, a founding member of the Gigabit Ethernet Alliance, announced a fiber-based solution consisting of a Gigabit Ethernet server adapter and an 8-port Gigabit Ethernet switch. Delivering comprehensive networking solutions using industry standards- based technology is a key element of Intel's strategy of enabling the transition to higher-bandwidth networking and reducing total cost of ownership. Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information about Intel is available at www.intel.com/pressroom.
