Do it. Run "UNIX" at home.

Hard to believe the world hasn't caught on to a much better operating system than Bill's "great software". Having been spoiled by using AIX on an RS/6000 at work I knew there had to be a better mousetrap for the home market. There is.

I've got Red Hat Linux 5.1 up and running on a second hard drive. Red Hat Linux is $29.95 from Linux Mall. linuxmall.com
(if you order online by July 31st and refer to the offer code and price in their Linux Journal ad on page 39)

Netscape Navigator/Communicator is included on the Red Hat CD.

For a spreadsheet, word processor etc. I'm using Applix Office Suite. ($74.95 from LinuxMall.com)

Check out some of these sites:

redhat.com

li.org

linuxjournal.com

linuxresources.com

freeyellow.com Linux Mini-Box

linuxmall.com

cs.helsinki.fi Linus Torvalds' site

applix.com

You have a choice of at least three GUI's :

XFree86 (I'm running) xfree86.org

Metro-X metrolink.com

KDE project (latest?) kde.org (look at these screenshots!)

There you go. You've got a commercial flavor of Unix for an operating system, Netscape Navigator/Communicator and an Office Suite for a total of $104.90 that blows the doors off of Windows.

I wouldn't short MSFT and INTC just yet. But any operating system good enough for supercomputers is good enough for my desktop.

Downside:

You have to schedule beer breaks because it doesn't crash.

Warnings:

Xboing is addictive and Xgammon cheats like a big dog.

Best of luck.
