PFE 2nd Quarter, 1998 Earnings

The Challenge

I'm guessing PFE Earnings Per Share for the 2nd Quarter, 1998 will be $.58.

Viagra is an unpredictable element in the earnings equation, but the margin on those $7.00 pills must be excellent, particularly since the sale ramp is due to PR and word of mouth, not advertising.

According to whispernumber.com the Street is whispering $.55. I think Pfizer will beat the whisper by 5%, weighing in at $.58, and making me a little richer.

jmho, Frank

The Leprechaun has told me "55" and I believe him. He is
hardly ever, almost never, nearly always right.

EPS estimate = $0.56 (from my earlier post).

Viagra underestimate in consensus, momentum from last qtr $0.53.

Nice to see the contest here on SI! I entered a few back on AOL but couldn't stand the rest of AOL's garbage.

PFE 2nd Quarter, 1998 Earnings = .49

Would have been greater but foreign currency will impact earnings by 3% - 4%. However, stronger sales of pharmas such as Norvasac, Lipitor, Zoloft, Aricept, Trovan and Viagra will still allow them to beat consensus.

PFE Earnings-2nd Quarter '98-----My original estimate was .47
before the contest started. I'm upgrading it to .53 for the
following reasons:

1) 300 mill rev. from viagra sales with little advertizing
expense . Bottom line will be increased closer to a
30 % margin rate rather than standard 20% due to lower rollout costs.

2) Lipitor and Aricept drug sales did exceptionally well. Market
has not recognized value of pfe's marketing alliance with WLA
for lipitor.

3) Would have been .55 but impact from currency exchange rates
will exact a 3-4% reduction to earnings

PFE closed at 111 1/8, up 1 5/8 on a down to flat day for the
markets. Volumn was 3.6 million, below average of daily 5.2 mill.
Rumor on Yahoo board has pfe reporting before the bell, July 13th, in
order to shut out the after market trading crowd. Anyone confirm? If this holds true, look for a major upside surprise come Monday morning.
With most estimates between .42-.44, earnings should come in
at least 10% above expections.

A question for the thread? Is the 2nd quarter usually pfe' slowest
earnings period? Last year's earnings of .35 for q/e 06/97 was by far
their lowest of the year.Quarter over quarter comparisons should
look great to the fundamentalists, justifying pfe' high p/e ratio.
115 will be the major hurdle this week. If it breaks through by
Friday and holds that level, there will no resistance until about
125.

Later,
