Scott: MSFT is getting their butts kicked with the Java paradigm. SUNW has always been a better software company (quality-wise) than MSFT, they just didn't focus on that aspect of their business. Think back about 3-4 years where MSFT was with developers and now look at today, MSFT is losing ground big-time with developers. Some of this was MSFT's own undoing, related to the trash products they ship. Developers will only put up with this so long, and MSFT exceeded the critical duration.

Competition from as many sources as possible increases customer choice. How would precluding Sun from participating in the competition increase customer choice? And I don't think Sun has done anything to indicate it "wants to be just like Microsoft" (whatever that means in your mind).

Do you speak for Weblogic? If not, then how do you know how they view Sun?

Solaris and Windows are two platforms Sun has chosen to support directly, presumably because of their popularity, but no attempt is being made to establish a caste system. FYI, Sun is engaged in the ISO standards process. It is that standard that will ultimately ensure consistency across platforms -- it is not necessary for Sun to do every implementation by itself; to do so WOULD be to engage in the Microsoft style.

All JMHO, of course.
