David,

Stick with the Mac!

Don't think you can upgrade from 68040 chip for it is nubus and not pci. Might be wrong though. The upgrade card is expensive($650-$1999)Why don't you wait until next month and go imac? My 8 year old son wants one in the worst way, currently using my old LC575. It won't run Diablo and so we fight over the use of my Power Computing Power Center which he will inherit soon!

>>Allen, I am curious about your wife's upgraded Mac with a G3 chip.
Where did you get it from, did you do it yourself, how much did it
cost, and can it be done with a Quadra 840AV midtower system which has
a 68040 chip not a Power PC chip? I am considering sticking with Mac
if I can upgrade cheaply. Otherwise, Pentium-land I go.<<

David -

We got the upgrade board from MacZone, for about 1150 two months ago. It's even less now. Moreover, I now hear that a company called Power Logix has G3 upgrade cards with a comparable feature set, for about 30% less than Newer Tech (the kind we got). My wife's UMAX S900 was designed with the CPU on a card to make it very easily upgradable. I did it myself in about 5 minutes. No problem at all.

Sadly, the Quadras weren't designed for simple upgrades. I believe that there are some upgrade solutions for them, but I believe that the rest of the system wouldn't be up to snuff, and it would be like putting a Lamborghini engine in a Ford Escort.

Send me some e-mail, though, and I can put you on to some really good deals to keep you in Mac-land. PCs are slightly cheaper, but it isn't worth the extra bother. Believe me, I have plenty of experience with both.

Still waiting for the USB Zip announcement. Should happen tomorrow.
