Veeco Instruments Inc. (VECO) will likely face a
difficult session Wednesday after the company said it
will fall short of analysts' second-quarter estimates.
The chip equipment maker expects to earn 22 to 24
cents a share, compared to analysts' consensus
estimate of 33 cents. Veeco cited weak data-storage
and semiconductor market conditions for the
shortfall. Shares closed down 1 at 22 3/4.



Electro Scientific downgraded

Electro Scientific Corp. fell as analysts downgraded the shares in the
wake of weak fourth-quarter results. Salomon Smith Barney lowered its
rating to "outperform" from "buy," while NationsBanc Montgomery cut the
issue to "hold" from "buy." Electro Scientific (ESIO) earned 54 cents a
share, well short of the consensus estimate of 65 cents, according to First
Call. The company has shifted to lower-margin products. Shares closed
down 2 5/16 at 28 7/8.

Aetrium sees Q2 loss

Aetrium Inc. (ATRM) shares fell 6.1 percent after it said it won't meet
analysts' expectations for the second quarter. The chip equipment maker
expects to post a loss of 6 to 8 cents a share on revenue of $16 million.
The consensus estimate of analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment
Research was a profit of 6 cents. Aetrium cited customer General
Scanning Inc.'s decision to exit the business for the shortfall. Shares lost
9/16 to 8 11/16. See Press Release


Zoran expects wider loss

Zoran Corp. (ZRAN) fell 16 percent after revealing it will report a
wider-than-expected second-quarter loss. The chip maker expects to
report a loss of 9 cents to 12 cents a share, while analysts were looking
for a profit of 7 cents. A year ago, Zoran earned 9 cents. Zoran shares
closed down 1 7/8 at 10. See related story.
