Nortel & QC

Guys, with all due respect to the few sentient investors at AOL and Yahoo, most of the commentary is several notches below inane (although Clark Hare did offer a high IQ opinion on Yahoo the other day).

Nortel and Qualcomm are partners and they are competitors. By its nature, this relationship is therefore a balancing act. QC would like to see Nortel push CDMA harder; Nortel, on the other hand, wants to maximize its profitability and cannot be overjoyed with sharing marque orders QC. Nevertheless, the contract is the contract and both companies have affirmed the economics thereof. From a cultural perspective, QC has clearly recruited heavily from both NT and BellLabs, so I see little to suggest any philosophical smoking guns.

I am quite frankly amazed by the market's blase reaction to the Nortel order. This contract, in concert with QC's soon to be announced Mexican infrastructure order, all but assures us that Qualcomm will reach a key inflection point...a profitable infrastructure division...over the next couple of quarters. The Street may be snoozing, but the fundamentals keep improving.

Best regards,

Gregg
