You are absolutely right. Is a design win with 3 chips on a cabletron router more important than a design win with one chip on a cisco router? No way! But the design win is a simple metaphor to understand the trends. A design win replacing an existing product is counted as a design win. We don't have qtr/qtr design win figures, they just started detailing them and I expect they'll stop shortly. It's like the sales force head count disease in enterprise software. I am watching their dominance of the atm and sonet physical layer and their expansion into the other layers of atm and sonet combined with my conviction on the demand for more WAN bandwidth as my continued reasons for holding and adding to the position. I'm hoping for some fun times next week. TD
