Joe - All digital WLL and mobile systems are incompatible with wireline modems, precisely because of the compression. Unlike some forms of compression, this is lossy compression - there are characteristics of sound which humans do not notice if they are missing from a voice and these are removed as unnecessary users of bandwidth. This is ok for voices but catastrophic for data, thus you have to buy a special modem, which bypasses the normal voice compression. And the system you are using has to be set up to allow a translation of the wireless modem format into more standard formats (like the new 56k standard V.90).

Hope this helps.
